Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu arrived in India on Sunday for a four-day state visit aimed at mending strained ties between the two nations, amid an economic crisis in the Maldives. During his visit, President Muizzu will meet with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The discussions are expected to result in agreements in the infrastructure sector to bolster the bilateral relationship.In addition to his meetings in the capital, Muizzu will visit Mumbai and Bengaluru to participate in business events. His visit to India, which will last until Thursday, is seen as an important step toward resetting diplomatic and economic relations.External affairs minister S Jaishankar met with President Muizzu and expressed optimism about the upcoming talks with Prime Minister Modi. He remarked, "Pleased to call on President Muizzu today at the start of his State Visit to India. Appreciate his commitment to enhance India-Maldives relationship."The ministry of external affairs (MEA), in announcing the visit earlier this week, emphasized that Muizzu’s trip is expected to provide further momentum to the cooperation and strong people-to-people ties between India and the Maldives. This marks Muizzu’s first bilateral visit to India, following his attendance at Prime Minister Modi's swearing-in ceremony in June.
