Mohali: A lineman died after being electrocuted while fixing a power fault at a transformer in New Defense Colony of Zirakpur on Wednesday. The shock was so severe that he got stuck to the transformer.
Harpreet Singh alias Happy (28), a resident of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Colony in Banur,was taken to GMCH, Chandigarh, for treatment, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. His body has been kept in the mortuary for an autopsy. The victim had married just three months ago.
Harpreet was appointed in Powercom on April 21, 2023, and was on probation. He was performing his duty in Zirakpur. On Wednesday, around 10am, a fault occurred in the transformer in New Defense Colony. After receiving a complaint, he went to fix it. It is reported that there were two transformers close to each other at the accident site. Harpreet had the supply to one transformer shut off, but the other was still live. While working, his hand touched the live transformer, resulting in the fatal electric shock.
When his colleagues found out, they shut off the transformer supply, brought him down, and rushed him to GMCH. Zirakpur police have initiated inquest proceedings in the case.
