FEROZEPUR: Taking serious note of the reported torture of a youth in illegal police custody, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Ferozepur has suspended three police personnel, including a Station House Officer (SHO), following an investigation that confirmed their involvement in the unlawful detention and torture of an individual.
According to reports, the complainant in the case was arrested with a small quantity of a prohibited medical intoxicant by Assistant Sub-Inspector Malkit Sharma and Constable Ranjit Singh of the Guruhar Sahai police station. During the search, the officers allegedly took Rs 3,000 from his pocket and further demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 to avoid registering a police case. The complainant alleged that he was tortured while in illegal custody and was forced to pay the bribe.
Later, the complainant approached the SSP of Ferozepur seeking justice, prompting an inquiry led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Satnam Singh of Guruhar Sahai. The DSP’s investigation confirmed that the officers had unlawfully detained the individual and subjected him to torture.
Acting on the report, SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu ordered the suspension of three officers: SHO Jagdeep Singh, ASI Malkit Sharma, and Constable Ranjit Singh.
The swift action by the SSP highlights the Punjab Police’s commitment to upholding law and order while ensuring accountability within its ranks.
